Dubinskys in Volozhin, 1811
This 1811 list shows Mowsza Dowyd Elowicz Dubinski at the head of household 57 in Volozhin. His patronymic, Elowicz, means that his father was Elia. The page says that he came from Vilna in 1800. Later revision lists name Itska as the son of a man called Movsha. Movsha David, son of Elia, is a candidate for that father, consistent with the dates but not confirmed. Itska was Yeshaya Dubinsky's father. Together, the lists carry Yeshaya's line back to Itska and, if Movsha David is his father, to a man named Elia.
What is a revision list?
A revision list was a Russian Empire census organized household by household for tax and military-conscription accounting. New counts were usually made about every 10 to 20 years. For Jewish families before modern birth, marriage and death registers, these lists are often the main record of who lived together and how one generation was connected to the next.
This page is an 1811 supplementary count between the 1795 and 1816 revisions. It is written in Polish; later lists use Russian.
How to read this page
- The number at the far left is the household number.
- Men and women have separate sections.
- The columns compare earlier and current ages and note changes such as arrival, departure, death or birth.
- A patronymic is a name that identifies a person's father. Here, “Elowicz” means “son of Elia.”
Household 57, the highlighted row
- Mowsza Dowyd Elowicz Dubinski
- The household head, age 31. His patronymic identifies his father as Elia. The row says he came from Vilna in 1800.
- Chana
- Movsha David's wife, age 22. Her line says she came with her husband. The 1816 female list gives Movsha David's household a wife aged 23 and two daughters, 9 and 7. Their names are hard to read, so their exact readings remain open.
- Sroel Hirszowicz Wazbord
- Another man in the same registration, age 22, who came from Mir. The 1816 list, under the same household, marks him as died 1826. The list does not state his relationship to Movsha David. A shared registration can include a relative, lodger or associate.
- Szeyna
- Sroel's wife, who came from Smorgon in 1808. Her age on this page is unclear. She is not listed under this household in the 1816 female list; where she was by then is not known.
The household above is separate
Household 56 is the neighboring household, not part of household 57. It lists Mejer Leybowicz, his wife Ruchama and their daughter Sufra.
Why David is not shown as a brother
A later 1834 list in Mshigan names a different man, David Eliov syn Dubinsky, whose father was also named Elia. The records do not prove that the two fathers named Elia were the same person. David is a possible brother of Movsha David, not a proven one.
